Magrathea Meets Purity Targets for US Department of War
San Francisco, 19 November 2025 - Magrathea, a company developing innovative technology for producing clean, secure magnesium metal from seawater and brines, has successfully produced metal that the U.S. Department of War has independently confirmed meets purity targets.
In February 2024, the Department of War announced that it awarded Magrathea $19.6M via Title III of the Defense Production Act for rebuilding America’s magnesium metal supply base. The partnership included milestones associated with the purity of the metal produced at each stage of scale-up of Magrathea’s process.
The Department of War received a sample of metal from Magrathea’s pilot in July 2025 and tested it internally. The results of the test work have confirmed that Magrathea’s metal meets the purity target for the project at pilot scale, a critical milestone in the multi-year effort.
“This achievement validates years of engineering effort,” said Alex Grant, CEO of Magrathea. “We’ve shown that magnesium will again be produced domestically to the standards required for America’s defense industrial base. We are grateful for the Department of War being part of this journey.”
Magrathea’s process represents the first meaningful advancement in magnesium production in nearly half a century. By producing metal from seawater and brines, Magrathea eliminates dependence on polluting, high-risk foreign suppliers and opens the door for large-scale, domestic production of this strategic material critical to aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors.
This confirmation by the Department of War marks a pivotal milestone not just for Magrathea, but for U.S. national security. With purity validated, Magrathea will move forward with scaling its technology to commercial throughput, establishing America’s first new magnesium smelter in decades.
